A health education pilot for Latina women with diabetes

The purpose of this study was to develop and pilot test nutrition and physical activity educational tools for immigrant Latina women who have type 2 diabetes and low health literacy levels. Participants' ability to use the tools was assessed and a focus group was conducted (n=26). During two classes, the women were taught diabetes concepts related to nutrition and physical activity and were given a pedometer. The women recorded in a log vegetables consumed and steps taken.

Health Literacy Self-Management by patients with T2DM and Stage 3 CKD

This is a qualitative study report from a parent study that used a concurrent mixed methods design whose aim was to describe the transition and self-management experiences of patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and stage 3 chronic kidney disease (CKD). Six adult men and women recruited from outpatient clinics completed two focus group interviews.

Long QT Syndrome: A Case Report, Genomics, and Clinical Implications

  Long QT syndrome (LQTS) is a hereditary disorder in which the majority of affected individuals present with QT prolongation on electrocardiograms (ECGs), arising from delayed ventricular repolarization. This commonly arrhythmia-associated genetic syndrome can lead to sudden cardiac death (SCD) and increased propensity for arrythmogenic syncope. The authors describe the case of a young patient who presented with episodes of syncope, prolonged QTc interval on ECG, and family history of SCD.

Facilitating Behavior Change With Low-literacy Patient Education Materials

  Objective: To describe a process for developing low-literacy health education materials that increase knowledge and activate patients toward healthier behaviors.

Evaluation of a visit preparation intervention implemented in two rural, underserved counties of Northern California

 Objective
Evaluate satisfaction with visit preparation at three rural resource center sites.
Methods
The resource centers sent eight employees and two volunteers for training at UCSF in Consultation Planning (CP). CP is a service to help patients make a list of questions before seeing their doctors. Researchers used multivariate ordered logistic regression analysis to investigate the variation in satisfaction among 99 CP Clients served by the resource centers in 2003.
